When investing in cooling pajamas, fabric is paramount. Look for natural fibers like cotton, bamboo and linen, which are not only soft to the touch, but breathable and airy while soaking up any moisture from sweating while you sleep. While it can be pricey and tough to maintain (a single drop of water or sweat will show right through), silk is a naturally cooling fabric ideal for hotter climates. Other fibers like Tencel/modal boast stellar moisture-wicking properties while keeping you cool, and it’s also naturally wrinkle-resistant for easy packing. Avoid synthetic fabrics like polyester and spandex. While they hold their shape while in transit, they aren’t the most breathable.
Materials are only half the battle — when choosing the most cooling pajamas, look for shorter cuts like tank tops or T-shirt sleeves as well as cropped pants or shorts. Nightgowns are also super breathable, providing the ultimate ventilation for your bottom half.
There are two types of hot sleeping environments: those located in humid destinations, whether you’re camping or staying in a cabana, and those that are synthetically heated through the likes of fireplaces and heaters. To avoid decision fatigue while you pack, use a similar packing strategy for both environments and stick to breathable materials like cotton, modal, and linen in breezy, roomy silhouettes that don’t cling to the skin. Not only do these fabrics tend to be thin and lightweight, but they’ll help absorb sweat as you sleep.
Cotton is a great bet since not only is it cooling, but it’s sweat wicking, breathable, and soft to the touch for a comfortable night’s sleep. It’s widely available, so you’ll have no issues finding the perfect cooling cotton pajamas for your trip. Modal not only stands up to frequent washing, packing, folding and tossing and turning, but it’s extremely cooling since it wicks away sweat. Similarly, linen provides ultimate breathability, and while it tends to accumulate wrinkles, that’s all part of the effortlessly cool beachy look.
Skip thick materials you’d wear in winter sitting by the fire like thick merino, Icelandic or acrylic wool, polar fleece, velvet, or nylon, which don’t do a great job of absorbing moisture.
